We bought a new digital meat thermometer that was made in China. The following are the directions, word for word, off the instruction sheet.

"The product named 81.6 in fob is a product which can helps you eliminate over-cooking or under-cooking foods . use the DEC or INC key to set the "set temp" as user want , when "current temp" is reach or above this setting ,the unit will alarm 5 min or alarm until user press the timer/clock . the thermometer and the timer/clock is unattached and can work simultaneous . At first, we define a new concept of "switch off " for this IC: in "off" state, it only stop measuring and close the display of thermometer, keep the timer displayed and it still work. Because we define a new "off" concept, whether timer is running or not, still we can enter "off" status if the 2 conditions are met together."

I'm sure the directions made perfect sense in Chinese. Chinese to English translation must be hard. Try reading the wrapper on your chopsticks next time you get take-out.
