Nightime Hospital Run

Guess what we did last night!

We were up all night at the hospital with our very sick little boy. I have written about Nathan's weak lungs. Well, they have struck again.

He has croup and pneumonia.

At 12:30 last night, just as I was finally dozing off after a long day and restless night, I heard that distinctive barking cough that indicates croup. I literally ran into his room and took him downstairs to give him a breathing treatment. He has a tendency to go from bad to worse quickly. His arms, hands, legs, and feet we a light blue color from lack of oxygen. The breathing treatment I gave him didn't work, so I gave him another and his prescription cough syrup. Less than two hours later he needed another treatment and he spiked a fever. It was 3:00 am by then and we still had not slept. We called the doctor who sent us to the ER. Eppie came over to stay with Kenny.

We were taken straight back when we got to the ER and saw a doctor with 10 minutes (I love our hospital!) They gave Nathan two more breathing treatments, a steroid shot, and an acetaminophen suppository (that was fun). Then they x-rayed his lungs.

The x-rays came back with pneumonia. His breathing was still of, so he got another breathing treatment and an antibiotic shot. He slept for a little while which was a great blessing. The doctor came back in and said he wasn't 100% pleased with the progress Nathan was making. He said he was considering admitting him to the pediatric wing of another hospital, but he also thought we could do the same thing at home that they would do in a hospital. Lucky for us, he decided we could take him home with a care plan. If he gets worse, we go back and that probably means a hospital admission.

In summary, during a 6 hour time frame Nathan had: 6 nebulizer breathing treatments, x-rays, a rectal temperature taken, cough syrup, acetaminophen suppository, a steroid shot, and an antibiotic shot. And he was diagnosed with croup and pneumonia.

Kenny has a croup like cough as well.

Ken and I didn't sleep all night. He is upstairs napping now and I will get to take a nap in a few hours. Luckily, I am off work until Tuesday for Easter.

We were supposed to go camping tonight. Pretty sure that ain't gonna happen!

The poor kid. I know what it's like to be in the hospital with a sick little boy. No fun at all. I'm glad you got to go home. I hope they get better. Keep us updated.
