Twice today I was sitting in stand still traffic when the person behind me started honking. I hate honking. I've honked at someone about 3 times in my life and each time it was light tap because the person in front of me was distracted and didn't realize the light had turned green. Other than that, I feel that honking at other cars is stupid other than to avoid serious accidents (which is the actually purpose of your horn).
When someone honks due to traffic, I would love to have a little button in my car to push that makes a sign come down in the rear window that says, "Do you really think laying on your horn for 5 seconds is going to make the traffic in front of you disappear? Seriously, moron. Just cowboyt up and wait like everyone else. What good does honking your horn do? Nothing!"
And if someone does something stupid on the road, why honk at them? If someone makes a mistake- as we all do from time to time- all you've done by honking at them is point out their folly and make them feel bad about themselves. And if they did it on purpose because they are rude and jerky drivers, do you really think your honking at them is going to encourage them to change their mean habits? No, it won't. Much the same as getting a speeding tickets doesn't stop a perpetual speeder. All honking does is makes everyone around you stop focusing on driving because they are trying to figure out who is honking! What a safe idea!
Okay, off my soap box now. I have to go get mean with two little boys who are supposed to be going to sleep but are in fact jumping off the bed.

For that reason it is illeagal to honk your horn in Finland unless it is to avoid an accident.
I did it anonymous because i didn;t feel like signing in

I probably honked at people once a week in Provo! I cant help it! People make me angry sometimes and I figure its better to honk than to say inappropriate things or give inappropriate hand gestures!
Along with David's comment, it is also illegal here in American to honk unless it is a life threatening event. Same thing happened to me yesterday. I was in a left hand turn lane watching the oncoming traffic. I wasn't going to turn!
I totally understand! I hate it when people honk their horn. I pretty much never do. But I also have to agree with Cassie. Provo drivers are not ever paying attention so you have to honk at them to bring them back to what is going on.
I would like to have signs that come down in my back window -- a lot would say something like "I'm already going five over, I'm not going to speed anymore than that because you keep tailgating me" or a loud speaker would be nice for the snowbirds who insist on going 15 under, I would kindly say "Do you realize that the speed limit is actually...?" Some people.
