Ooooo.... Pretty

What is it about a fountain full of coins that is so alluring to pint-sized people? We have to stop at this fountain every time we visit the mall. And I had better have a penny for them, or be subjected to "the look" (see previous post.)

PS- I got a haircut. We went to the mall with my sister and her rugrat to go to this adorable little shop that sells beautiful hair clips so we can be pretty for the wedding. Since my hair is now short, I got a pretty barrette to slip onto the side of my hair. I'll post picture next weekend.

PSS- Ken posted some pictures of the helicopter he flew out on the oil rigs. Click here to see.

Put The Boy To Work

Ken and I decided it was about time for Kenny to start pulling his weight around here. You know, earning his keep. He's five now...that's practically a man.

We decided to start small. Nothing to overwhelming. Daddy helped him at first, just to show him the ropes. After a few pases, Kenny really seemed to be getting the hang of things.
Finally, we were confident he could handle the rest of the yard on his own.
In all seriousness, we did not make him mow the entire yard by himself. He did help Daddy mow the entire yard.

This marks a momentous occasion in my life. Evidence that the years of diapers, nursing, bottles, sippy cups, midnight rendezvous, runny noses, coloring on the walls, potty training, and food on the floor will pay off. The entire point of all those things is to someday be able to have your children take over the work as free laborers- all in the name of instilling in them "a good work ethic." Ahhh...the thought makes my heart go pitter patter.

My Dad was a pro at this. We didn't have toilet brushes. We had our hand and a rag. And why waste money on a mop to clean your HUGE tile floor when you have five children? Section off four rows each and give them a bucket and a rag. I used to think I was being subjected to death by cleaning, but now I know that my father understood a higher principal. Instilling a good perverse work ethic.

PS- I love you Dad.

Flight Time

Ken got the opportunity to go flying with a man in our Stake (Les) who has been his mentor in the flying world. He took Ken out to the oil rigs in the Gulf. Les flies a Sikorsky S-76, a multi-million dollar twin-turbine helicopter. Besides being a great opportunity to experience the cream of the crop in helicopter flight, Les turned the controls over to Ken for 1.6 hours of flight time. He even got to take off from a rig platform. I am so grateful he has a mentor ho knows the business in and out and can offer such great advice and encouragement. Every time Ken talks to or flies with Les he comes away with a renewed vigor for what he is doing.

Party Time!

To celebrate the big 5, we decided to spend some one-on-one time with the birthday boy. We do a lot as a family, but I feel horrible that neither of my boys gets a much alone time as they deserve. We took Nathan to Eppie's house for a nap and playing while Daddy and I took Kenny out for the afternoon.

First, we went bumper bowling. Kenny can't boel the ball, but he is good at rolling it. Unfortunately, he got his little thumb stuck in one of the holes and sprained his finger. But he still played. He bowled a 74. I bowled a 73. He beat me...but I let him. I swear. Cross my heart. I really let him win and was NOT beat fair and square by a 5 year old little boy.

After bowling, we took Kenny to this new place that just opened near our house. It is called Fan Max Jumpin'. It's an inflatable world. We had the BEST time! This place is cheap in comparison to other places like this. They also let parents play for free with your kid. They also have counselors available to play with your kid if you want to take a break in the parent's room- a lovely place where no children are allowed, there is a big screen t.v., leather couches, magazines, and a window into the play world. We jumped, slid down inflatable slides, and played tag. It was so wonderful to have fun play time with just Kenny. I loved seeing how joyful Kenny felt. His charming smile never left his face.

We went to dinner at Kenny's favorite restaurant- Denny's (or the breakfast store.) Eppie, Papa, David, and Katherine joined us. After eating we headed back to the house to meet a few family friends for cake and ice cream.

Due to various circumstances, we ended up with a full house for cake and ice cream. Kenny had a Star Wars cake with a light up Yoda on top. We got the opportunity to meet my new little niece, Avery. She is very sweet. We talked and the kids played. All in all, I think we had a wonderful day.

Happy Birthday Little Man

Today marks a special anniversary. Ken and I have been changing diapers for 5 years now. That is 1825 days. Ah, the memories.

Seriously, today Kenny is 5 years old. I can hardly believe how fast the time has gone. He has grown into such a smart, energetic little person. He is loving, affectionate, and is always going to make you laugh. We are so very blessed to have him in our family.

Happy Birthday Kiddo!!

I'm Finished!

It took me 12 hours straight, but I finished the final Harry Potter book. Wow! I was very impressed. That's all I'm going to say for those of you that have not read it, but I am very happy with how this last book was written. J.K. Rowling is an incredibly talented author. I hope she does more writing, even though Harry Potter has come to an end.

On a funny note, yesterday when we were coming in the front door, a bug flew onto Kenny's neck. He ran inside screaming and wildly spelling the back of his neck. He looked straight at his Dad and said, "Daddy, go give that bug a spanking! He was touching my neck!!"

Angry Faces

Last night Ken and I were talking about something of absolutely no consequence and he did one of those fake pouty things. I started to laugh hysterically because he looked just like Nathan. Then we started talking about the funny faces and ticks our kiddos have. I laughed so hard I may have lost bladder control (just kidding....that only happens when I'm preggers.)

Let's start with Nathan. My baby has big, round, blue eyes and naturally pouty lips. Mind-numbing adorable. When he gets upset, he slightly lowers his head, tucks his top lip under, and sticks this bottom lip out as far as possible. He then walks with the weight of the entire world on his two year old shoulders and rest his head dejectedly against the wall with his hands hanging at his side. I'm telling you, it is impossible to keep a straight face. He also likes to be held on your lap. If you try to put him down before he wants to be put down, he pulls his legs up and straight out. He refuses to put his feet down. I stand there bouncing him up and down trying to encourage him release his legs, but that boy is stubborn. He does the same thing on grocery carts. If you try and put him in the seat part in the front, he sticks his legs out and hooks them on the back part of the seat. Once that happens, the only way to get him into the seat try to hold him with one hand while using your other hand to manually bend his knees. Let's just say it never really works and he ends up walking or sitting in the basket.

And my sweet little Kenny-man. When he gets upset he lowers his head and scrunches up his mouth and forehead. His voice also goes up an entire octave which, given his already high pitched voice, rapidly reaches the level only canine animals can hear.

They're so cute when they're mad.

Guess What I Learned!

If you drop a pot holder on the red part of a hot oven, it WILL catch on fire.

But don't panic- the irresistible sinfully good cookies I am famous for were not damaged during the fire. Whew...good thing.

On a completely unrelated note, Nathan has this serious thing with his pants. He truly enjoys the freedom of bare legs and a diaper bum. However, as you can see from the picture below, rather than discarding his pants in the middle of the floor, he decided to keep them around- just in case.

On yet another completely unrelated and slightly more disgusting note, I only slept for 2 1/2 hours last night. Why you ask? Here's a hint. At 3:00 am, you could find me cleaning throw up off the carpet, kitchen floor, laundry basket, the outside of the washing machine, sheets, my clothes, and Kenny's clothes. Fun stuff. Really. I'm not being the least bit sarcastic.

Full Day

We had a busy day. My hubby woke up at 6:00 to get ready for a long flight. Being the amazing, sweet, loving, and incredibly handsome man that he is, he made the boys and I breakfast (bacon, eggs, and toast.) After kissing him goodbye and sending him off to fly these southern skies, I tackled the toy room. I have been asking Kenny to help me work on this room for weeks, but he just sits and watches me clean it. So I told him he had to do it. Of course, every time he went in to clean it he made an even bigger mess. It had reached the point of total disaster. I told Kenny I would clean it, but I was cleaning out and getting rid of some stuff. He was not exactly happy about that, but he'll deal. I spent 1 hour and 45 minutes cleaning out the closet and the room. I boxed up all the straggling baby toys, tossed a sack full of broken or lame toys, and took a big tub over to my parent's house for them to keep for grandchildren. The room looks much better now.

After the cleaning, we took the tub of toys and dropped them at Eppie's house. I then took the boys with my to the post office. Incidentally, the people that work there know my boys. We don't know them, but they have seen us often enough over the years that they know the kids and give them treats. After the post office we went to Target to get my some longer crew socks to wear under the ankle brace I am going to be sporting for the next month. I'm all about high fashion! Next stop was the salon for little man haircuts. Kenny jumps right into the chair and chats away with the stylist. Nathan begins screaming so loud he stops breathing for several seconds at a time. I have to sit in the chair and hold his body and head in a vice grip. You'd think by now he would be used to haircuts, but he hates them. After torturing our youngest son, we headed home so he could take a nap and I could take an aspirin.

Ken came home around 2:30 and we all went swimming for an hour. After drying off, we left the boys with my mom for an hour so we could go get Kenny's birthday present (Star Wars theme). Then it was home for dinner, a few rounds of Star Wars X-box for the K-men, bath, and bedtime.

I am worn out. But we had a good day.

Oh To Be A Fanatic!

I have a few friends who are going to go with me to a midnight book party on Friday! I have to admit, I am very excited to get to the end of the series, though it saddens me that it will be the last. All good things must come to an end!

Twisted Ankle...again

I have, yet again, twisted my right ankle. Last spring (2006), I got my ankle stuck in a hole in the backyard and twisted my ankle. About a week later I got the same foot stuck in the same hole again and hurt myself. That hole has since been filled in. However, my right ankle has been weak every since. Normally, it is not a problem, but the first week of June I was out excercising and stepped into a whole and twisted my ankle again. I was not at home, so I had to walk all the way back home on my bum ankle. It took about two weeks to be able to walk on it without shooting pain. I have been very careful with it since then because it still hurts on occasion and I knew it needed time to heal. Last night, I was walking completely normally across my bedroom and suddenly my ankle rolled under my foot. I stepped on it hard and dropped to the floor. Now I haven't cried from pain since I delivered Nathan without an epidural, but I cried for this. It hurt so bad. I wasn't able to walk on it at all last night. I can get around okay today, but I have to use a brace, take a lot of ibrophren, and every step is painful. Lucky for me, I have hurt this ankle so often that it is a pain I am used to by now. If it is not feeling a lot better by tomorrow I am going to a doctor. I just hope this time it can heal fully without re-injury.

First Sentence

Nathan said his first full sentence. "Can I have a drink of water?" He has been repeating sentences he hears for a few months, but he has never independently put together his own sentence. Yeah Nathan!

Other favorite phrases include, "I did it, I did it!", "Tenny, Tenny, here.", and "Mommy...Um..."

Little Jay Bird

Sorry it has been awhile. Ken has been on the computer working with his flight simulator. Since his training is more important than my love for blogging, I figure I had better just wait.

I sent the boys out to play in the backyard on Tuesday. I set up the pool and pulled some weeds while the boys played. After about 45 minutes Nathan wanted to go inside. I took him in to dress him and left Kenny outside. I looked out the upstairs window about 5 minutes later and saw Kenny racing wildly around the backyard naked as a jaybird! He was picking up his bathing suit and throwing it around like a ball. Ken and I watched him and laughed for a few minutes. It was hilarious to see him running around so happy and free. I called out the window and he looked up and energetically waved "Hi Mommy!" I asked him where his swimming pants were and he looked both ways with a confused look. Then he looked down and back up laughing.

What is it with little kids and being naked? Nathan squeals with delight and runs all around upstairs before I track him down and dump in the bath. I love to see my kids filled with youthful innocence. It's very endearing.

And before anyone panics, we sat Kenny down and explained to him that taking off his clothes and running around was not a modest choice.

New Studio Portraits

I have cute kids. I know I'm a little bias, but every time I go out with them I have at least one person comment on how my kids look. I don't know what it is, but they are beautiful little boys. I can't wait (okay, I actually can wait) to have a little girl to add to these two. I love their sweet little cheeks and playful little eyes. One smile from either of them and I melt. I'm such a lucky mom!

Our July 4th Vacation

We went to Austin to spend the holiday with my sister and her husband. Of course, it rained the entire time. We had to change all our original plans due to the weather. We went to this cave in San Marcos. I love caves. There is something so awe inspiring about being under the earth. This particular cave was formed by an earthquake. You can actually see the two plates and and where the gulf coast plate slid under the hill country plate. Very cool. The boys had an okay time. We went with Rissa, Kevin, and Landan. One of the three boys was fussing at any given time and I have to admit, by the end of the tour I wondered why we thought having children was a good idea in the first place. Then I looked into their sweet little eyes and remembered all the loves and kisses and joy they bring into my life. Of course, at this point one of the angels would hit another one and the cycle started over again.
After diving into the earth 160 feet we went 160 feet up in the air to the top of an observation tower. We tried to pose the kids and have them all looking at us for a cute picture, but trying to get 3 small boys to all look and smile at the same time is akin to trying to stuff my I-have-had-two-babies body back into my pre- wedding jeans- it just ain't gonna happen.

Next on this little adventure was a train ride through a waterfall and deer petting zoo. We could have bought the boys some deer food, but we chose not to for three reasons: 1) They didn't deserve it after the fifth meltdown each, 2) I felt guilty that I was harboring a secret desire that one of the deer might accidentally get carried away eating out of the kids' hands and carry them off to magic train land or something for a few hours, and 3) deer slobber is nasty. The little zoo was fun. The boys got to touch a few of the deer but were able to keep slobber free. They also had peacocks with all their feathers out. Nathan really lite up when he saw those birds.

Now the real story surrounding the train. Kevin and Ken wanted the train to go through the waterfall without the little machine parting the water so the passengers stayed dry. We sat in the last car and the conductor person said he would try and shut the water-parting machine down early so our car could go through the water. The first time we went past the fall the bench I was sitting on got a little wet and the other bench stayed dry. The second time I told Kevin to move to my seat because he and Ken wanted to get wet, not me. So I moved to the dry seat with Nathan and Marissa. Look at what happened.
Please make a note of who is wet and who is not...mean boys.

After the cave place we went to see Kevin and Rissa's being built house. Due to it still raining, we took everyone to a movie. The men folk went to see Transformers, while us woman folk took the rugrats to see Ratitoulle. It was a cute movie. Of course we sat on the complete opposite side of the exit and Nathan pooped twice and Kenny had to go once as well. But they had a good time. After the movie, we sat out on the sidewalk and watched some fireworks displays because the dad's movie got out an hour later than our did. Nathan loved the fireworks. He would squeal with glee every time and say "That preddy!" Kenny was mesmerized by the cars driving by and Landon was into the grass.

Overall we had a great time and loved spending time with family. Hope you all had a happy, and not quite so wet, Fourth of July!

Crazy Weather

What is up with the weather? Normal weather for this area at this time of year is occasional thunderstorms, 90-100 degree temperatures, and humid, humid, humid! Lately the only thing it has done is storm and the temperatures have been in the 80s. I read a news report about the weather out west and how unbearably hot it is. They have our extreme heat. I can't say that I miss it. But the trade off is constant rain. I'm not sure which is worst.

I have vacation pictures to post, but I have not had the time to write about it.

I Can Do It!

I woke up Tuesday morning (the day we left) and saw this sight on the kitchen counter.
Kenny made his very own most favorite food in the whole world- a peanut butter and honey sandwich. Lovely. First bees, then a brand-new-now-half-empty honey bear. Let's just face the facts. My kitchen attracts honey. It's fate- what can ya do?

Boys and Bubbles

I got a bubble machine from a friend and turned it on in the living room. The boys went nuts! It was fun to see how excited they got. Nathan kept saying "bubbles, bubbles" over and over. Each time his voice got a little higher. Cute!

We are going to Austin for the next few days to see my sister and her family for the 4th. I'll write when I get back.

Happy Fourth!!

Happy Anniversary

When we were first dating, Ken worked at a flower shop as a delivery driver. This meant that I always had a fresh supply of beautiful purple roses. These arrived for me on Friday. I haven't had purple roses in a long time because Ken has not been able to find a shop that carries them here. I was positively giddy with delight when these arrived. They are absolutely beautiful! This picture does not begin to do them justice.

Today we celebrate 7 years of wedded bliss. Ken and I met on a blind date on September 3rd of 1999. I was 19 and had just returned to school from the summer at home. The week before I returned, I got a call from one of my roommates who said she had been hanging out this this new group of people and she had met this guy named Ken. She said she thought of me instantly and that we were going to be best friends or hate each other. Within a week of returning to school, I found myself waiting in the living room of my apartment for him to arrive. Ken had spent the summer working on a cattle ranch, and he showed up decked out in full cowboy gear (boots. hat, belt buckle, Wranglers, and a goatee). We were both very reluctant to go on this date. I had my eye on another boy in the complex. We went out to Applebee's for dinner. I remember having a salad. I was very nervous, but in a a good way. After dinner, this drunk guy in the parking lot asked us when we were getting married. Ken put his arm around me and said, "We're headed to Vegas right now." We went back to my apartment and I changed into a sweatshirt. We headed up the canyon and parked at this beautiful spot. We talked for hours (and did a little kissing- don't judge me.) I had the most wonderful feeling the whole time. When I got home that night my roommate asked me how things went and I told her "I think I'm going to marry him." Four weeks later he bought my ring and nine months after that we were married in the Salt Lake temple at 9:40 am.

Guess what- my new niece was born today. Check on Mike and Ashlyn's blog to see!
